LASIK eye surgery is a solution for a variety of vision problems, including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and, yes, astigmatism.
Astigmatism is very common among the patients we see in our Oklahoma City practice – in fact, most people have some degree of astigmatism. It occurs when the cornea is shaped irregularly. Instead of the cornea having a spherical shape, like a basketball, those with astigmatism have a cornea shaped more like a football. This results in the eye focusing light differently. Instead of an even distribution, it is sent more in one direction than the other. The result of this misshapen cornea is blurry or distorted vision.
There are many solutions for astigmatism, including glasses, contacts, and laser eye surgery. At Advanced Laser & Cataract Center in Oklahoma City, Dr. Belardo has performed more than 40,000 vision correction procedures, including correcting astigmatism with LASIK.
If you have an astigmatism and are considering LASIK, the first step is to schedule a free evaluation to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. You should be at least 18 years of age, healthy and with a prescription that has remained steady for at least a year. The procedure is quick, and most patients experience little to no pain.
If you are tired of your astigmatism blurring your view of life, talk to your LASIK surgeon to see whether laser eye surgery is a good choice for you.
