LASIK surgery has proven to be a great way to improve people’s vision. For years, it’s been the go-to alternative to corrective lenses for treatment of refractive errors (myopia/nearsightedness, hyperopia/farsightedness, astigmatism). Yet there have been advances in LASIK technology over the years that have made the surgery even safer and more effective than ever before. When you visit with a skilled eye doctor in Oklahoma City, you can learn more about IntraLase®, one of the great advances in LASIK surgery in recent years. We’d like to briefly go over IntraLase® and its advantages right now.
What is IntraLase®?
IntraLase® is just another way of saying bladeless LASIK surgery. It uses a specialized surgical laser to create the flap in the cornea, an essential step in correcting the vision. Using this flap, the shape of the cornea can be adjusted to improve your overall quality of vision.
How does IntraLase® differ from traditional LASIK?
During traditional LASIK surgery, an instrument called a microkeratome is used to create the corneal flap. This is an actual, physical object that makes contact with the eye, cutting carefully into the topmost part of the corneal surface. IntraLase® means no contact with eye save for the lasers that do all the work. That’s why many people have called IntraLase® “all-laser LASIK.”
How does IntraLase® work?
Even though new LASIK technology is involved, IntraLase® surgery is essentially identical to traditional LASIK. Patients are still asked to do the same preparatory measures prior to IntraLase® LASIK as they would prior to traditional LASIK. The surgeon will place special drops in the eyes to numb them and ensure patients feel no discomfort. A laser is used to create the flap in the cornea, and then a separate laser is used to reshape the cornea. The flap is set down to heal, and that’s that.
Is IntraLase® right for me?
If you are a good candidate for traditional LASIK, then yes, IntraLase® is right for you.
Advantages of IntraLase® Over Traditional LASIK
The primary advantage of IntraLase® over traditional LASIK is added safety, which is why we are so happy to offer it to patients at our Oklahoma City eye care and laser vision correction center. Since no instrument physically contacts the eye, there is even less possibility for human error of any sort. We allow our precision instruments to do the work, which means a better experience for you in the long run.
Keeping All of Your Options in Mind
Sometimes patients may not be good candidates for Oklahoma City LASIK. In those cases, alternative surgeries may be considered, such as PRK, LASEK, or Epi-LASIK. We will be sure to run through all of your options while you are here so that you can make the best informed decision about your vision.
