If you want to have great eyesight and reduce your dependence on corrective lenses, there are several options to consider. One of the most effective and most popular options out there is LASIK. LASIK surgery can alter the shape of your corneas and get you much closer to 20/20 vision, but a new advance in technology has enhanced the overall process. The next step forward is custom LASIK surgery, which you can learn more about by meeting with an eye doctor in Oklahoma City. We’d like to cover some of the basics about custom LASIK right now.
What is custom LASIK?
Custom LASIK is a refractive surgery procedure that reshapes the corneas in order to enhance a person’s vision. We use it at our laser eye surgery center in Oklahoma City to address refractive errors: nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. The surgery is performed using specially designed lasers that can precisely reshape the corneal surface. Once custom LASIK is performed, patients don’t need glasses or contact lenses to see clearly.
How Custom LASIK Differs from Traditional LASIK
Both LASIK and custom LASIK are similar, but the key difference rests in the technology used to achieve the results. Custom LASIK uses special digital mapping technology to very precisely detect imperfections of the cornea. This allows for an even more accurate vision correction procedure than traditional LASIK.
Benefits of Custom LASIK
One of the biggest benefits of custom LASIK technology is that it can allow surgeons to address both lower order aberrations and higher order aberrations. Traditional LASIK is only able to handle lower order aberrations.
Lower Order Aberrations vs. Higher Order Aberrations
Lower order aberrations refer to those common refractive errors we mentioned earlier: myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.
Higher order aberrations are more minute imperfections on the cornea that lead to vision problems that are more difficult to treat. Example of higher order aberrations include:
- Double vision
- Poor color sensitivity
- Poor night vision
- Poor contrast sensitivity
Is there an increased chance of 20/20 vision?
Given the added accuracy of the digital mapping, the chances of achieving 20/20 vision can be higher with custom LASIK when compared to traditional LASIK. That said, 20/20 vision is never a guarantee. The team here at our Oklahoma City LASIK center usually lets patients know that 20/40 vision is to be expected. This helps give our patients realistic expectations of custom LASIK and what it can achieve, leading to better patient satisfaction after the surgery is completed.
Is custom LASIK the best option for me?
Even though custom LASIK is a great option and can help many patients, it’s not always the right procedure. LASIK candidates need to be at least 18 years old, have a stable prescription for a year, not suffer from any eye infections, have healthy corneas, and mustn’t be pregnant at the time of surgery. If you are not a good candidate for custom LASIK, we can discuss your alternative options during the consultation process.
