What Is iLASIK?

Oklahoma City iLASIKIt is well known that LASIK can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. In fact, since LASIK was approved by the American Food and Drug Administration in the mid-nineties, millions of people have successfully eliminated their need for eyeglasses and contact lenses through LASIK surgery. When performed by our skilled, experienced surgeons, LASIK has proven to be remarkably safe and dependable. Nevertheless, many people are still hesitant to undergo the procedure because of the stage in which a handheld blade (microkeratome) is used to create a flap in the outermost layer of the cornea. While this blade is capable of great precision, many of the risks associated with LASIK revolve around complications with the corneal flap. Fortunately, for our Oklahoma City LASIK patients concerned about these complications, we offer a successful alternative to traditional LASIK: iLASIK. Also known as bladeless LASIK, iLASIK uses the revolutionary IntraLase® laser to create the corneal flap with extraordinary precision.

Are You a Candidate for iLASIK?

While the only way to determine whether you are a candidate for iLASIK is to first attend a personal consultation with one of our qualified eye professionals, suitable Oklahoma City bladeless LASIK candidates may include people:

  • with thin corneal tissue
  • with thick corneal tissue
  • who are in good health, and are over the age of 18
  • with eye prescriptions that have remained stable for at least 12 months
  • who are not ideal candidates for traditional LASIK surgery
  • who are without eye infections or injuries to the eyes

Advantages of iLASIK

It is important to note that all surgical procedures carry with them some degree of inherent risk, and LASIK is no exception. The risk of complications with the corneal flap is certainly far lower when traditional LASIK is performed by an experienced surgeon; however, no amount of skill can completely eliminate that risk. Simply stated, the microkeratome is less precise than a computer-guided laser, increasing the chances of minute irregularities in the shape or depth of the flap. These irregularities can result in the failure of the flap to heal correctly or completely smoothly, which may lead to distorted vision in the patient.

With iLASIK, the risk of flap irregularities is dramatically reduced. The IntraLase® laser is guided by a detailed computer analysis of your eye to ensure that the corneal flap is neither too deep nor too shallow and that the edges of the flap are as straight and smooth as possible. Another advantage of iLASIK is that it is virtually painless. During the procedure, numbing drops are used to eliminate any possible discomfort from the surgery. Because of this, most patients experience no more than slight pressure on the eyes during the procedure.

LASIK has always been a safe, effective surgery; with iLASIK, however, the chances of achieving crystal-clear, 20/20 or better vision are greater than ever before. Our Oklahoma City iLASIK specialists look forward to helping you achieve your vision goals.
